Analytics & BI Tools: Why They Have the Fewest Standard Features
Analytics and BI tools have only 14 critical features — the fewest of any SaaS category. But the low number doesn't mean the bar is low. It means the market is deeply fragmented.
Why So Few Standards
Analytics tools serve wildly different use cases: web analytics (Google Analytics competitors), product analytics (Mixpanel, Amplitude), business intelligence (Looker, Metabase), data visualization (Tableau), and embedded analytics (built into other products). What's critical for web analytics (event tracking, funnels) is irrelevant for a BI platform (SQL editor, data connectors).
The Universal Features
The 14 features that appear across all sub-categories: dashboard builder, data visualization (charts/graphs), data export, user permissions, API access, custom reports, real-time data refresh, and integration with data sources. Beyond these, every sub-category diverges.
