Project Management Software Features: The 155-Point Benchmark
We conducted the deepest feature analysis ever done on project management software. After studying 15 PM tools, industry reports, and the State of Agile Report, we built a 155-feature benchmark across 11 categories and 4 tiers.
The Four Tiers
Universal (60 features) — Every PM tool has these, even free tiers. Task creation, Kanban boards, custom fields, file attachments, comments. Missing any = not competitive.
Standard (58 features) — Most mid-tier tools ($10-20/user/month) have these. Gantt charts, sprint management, workload views, time tracking, approval workflows.
Advanced (25 features) — Premium/enterprise only ($25+/user/month). Capacity planning, SAML SSO, audit logs, critical path analysis, baseline tracking.
Cutting-edge (12 features) — Only 1-3 tools have these. AI-generated tasks, autonomous agents, SAFe support, cross-stack AI search.

Key Finding: No Tool Does Everything
Jira dominates Agile/Scrum but fails at Waterfall. Microsoft Project dominates Waterfall but is useless for sprints. ClickUp offers the broadest hybrid coverage but with less depth in each methodology. The benchmark helps you choose based on what your team actually needs.
